District Hires New Bearcat Boys' Basketball Coach
Aledo ISD has hired Jamon Copeland as the new Aledo Bearcats boys’ basketball coach.
Copeland previously served as the head men’s basketball coach at The University of Texas at Tyler since 2013. He led UT-Tyler to the program’s first postseason victory, first victory over a nationally-ranked opponent, and earned the most victories by a first-year head coach.
“We are extremely excited about the passion and experience that Jamon Copeland is bringing to our boys’ basketball program,” Aledo ISD Athletic Director Steve Wood said. “Coach Copeland is a high-energy, high-character coach and teacher whom we believe fits perfectly with what we want for our basketball teams.”
During Copeland’s tenure with UT-Tyler, he also led the program to its second, third and fourth-best seasons in program history.
Copeland, a Coppell native, served as Ave Maria University head men’s basketball coach from 2009-2013 and improved the team’s record every season and his teams were also nationally ranked.
Before arriving at Ave Maria, Copeland held assistant coaching roles at the collegiate level at Texas State University and Trinity Valley Community College (men’s and women’s teams). While at Trinity Valley, Copeland helped lead the Lady Cardinals to the Region XIV Championship and a NJCAA National Tournament appearance.
Copeland is a Franciscan University (Ohio) graduate and has a Master of Science from Texas A&M University-Commerce. His coaching career began as an assistant at Keller Central High School in 2004.
Copeland is also a Certified Strength and Conditioning Specialist (CSCS) through the National Strength and Conditioning Association and a Point Guard College Basketball Director. PGC is one of the nation’s premier basketball training programs.
“My family and I are grateful to call Aledo our new home and I am so honored to help lead the Bearcats’ program into the future” Copeland said. “I am very excited about this opportunity and look forward to meeting the players and families and building and as many new relationships as possible. I am thrilled to be a Bearcat!”
