School Board Approves AISD Becoming District of Innovation, 2019-2020 School Calendar

school calendar The Aledo ISD Board of Trustees voted unanimously for the District to become a District of Innovation (DOI) and adopted the innovation plan. In addition, the Board approved the 2019-2020 school calendar during Tuesday's regular meeting.

The Board and administration have been discussing seeking the DOI designation since September of 2018. The DOI committee of Aledo ISD staff members and community members, which began working in October, constructed the plan to align with the District’s instructional goals to ensure a culture of excellence that supports teaching and learning.

In creating the 2019-2020 calendar, a calendar committee of staff members from each campus considered state requirements, district priorities related to teaching and learning, and feedback from staff, community members, and the District’s standing District-Wide Education Improvement Committee. The District asked for feedback on the calendar and received more than 200 comments from parents, staff and members of the community that were considered by the committees.

As a District of Innovation, Aledo ISD is utilizing the calendar exemption in the DOI plan to begin 2019-2020 school year one week earlier than this school year. The District opted to ease into the process of an earlier start date by making it only one week earlier. The first day of school will be Tuesday, August 20, 2019. The final day of school will be Thursday, May 28, 2020.

Aledo ISD remains committed to hiring highly-qualified professionals with appropriate certifications and will continue to seek certified teachers to best serve its students. Through an exemption from existing teacher certification requirements, the District will be granted flexibility to hire professionals in specialized trades and vocations to teach identified Career and Technical Education courses and native speakers to teach Languages other than English courses, if certified teachers are not available.

In regard to the Behavior Coordinator exemption, the District is seeking a more collaborative approach to behavior management through the utilization of a coordinated team of professionals collaborating to address student behavior needs.
