Transition in the IEP State Requirements:

• Functional vocational evaluation if applicable
• Availability of age-appropriate instructional environments for students who are at least age 18
• Appropriate circumstances for referral to a governmental agency

Transition in the IEP State Requirements:

Appropriate state transition planning…must begin for a student not later than when the student reaches 14 years of age. The IEP must address nine areas:

• Student Involvement
• Parent involvement before age 18
• Parent involvement after age 18
• Post-secondary education options
• Employment goals and objectives
• Independent living goals and objectives beginning not later than the first IEP to be in effect when the child turns 16, or younger if determined appropriate by the IEP Team, and updated annually, thereafter, the IEP must include –
• Appropriate measurable postsecondary goals based upon age appropriate transition assessments related to training, education, employment, and, where appropriate, independent living skills; and
• The transition services (including courses of study) needed to assist the child in reaching those goals.

• Vocational training
• Independent living skills
• Transportation training
• Community-based instruction
• Functional academics
• Employment education

Pecan Valley IDD/ Tarrant County MHMR MEDICAID WAIVER LISTS

Texas Medicaid waivers are a gateway to getting services for your child. We strongly suggest that you consider adding your child to the waiver interest list(s), which many parents call “waiting lists,” if you haven’t already done so.

Even if you hope your child will never need those services, it is important that they be added to the interest list for any program(s) that might meet their needs. Your child might have to wait a long time to get services through the waiver. You can always decline the services once your child moves to the top of the list.

Many parents say they wish they had signed up for the waiver interest lists when their child was born or first diagnosed. Some of the interest lists have more than a 15-year wait time.

18+ students are determined by an ARD committee decision and must meet 18+ Program Requirements.

Eligible students for special education are those ages 3 through 21 (birth through 21 for students with visual or auditory impairments) who meet the legal requirements of one or more of the following disabilities as defined by the Texas Education Agency (TEA):

• Intellectually Disabled
• Autism
• Multiple Disabilities
• Deaf-Blindness
• Other Health Impairment
• Non-Categorical Early Childhood
• Orthopedic Impairment
