Texas Education Freedom Account (TEFA) – Special Education Update

The district will continue to follow all federal and state special education timelines for students referred for evaluation, including those considering the Texas Education Freedom Account (TEFA):

  • Initial evaluations will be completed within 45 school days of receiving parent consent.
  • An ARD meeting will be held within 30 calendar days of eligibility to develop a full IEP.

The district will develop a full IEP to ensure parents understand the district’s offer of a Free Appropriate Public Education (FAPE). This IEP meets the standard required for a TEFA IEP.

If applicable, the district will upload the FIE and IEP to the Ascend platform in TEAL.

The TEFA Disability Certification Form is not required if an FIE or other proof of disability is provided by the parent. The district can provide the FIE as proof of documentation but cannot certify that a disability exists without an FIE.
