Health Screenings
Student Health Screenings & Early Detection
Health screenings are conducted in accordance with Texas Department of State Health Services requirements to support early identification of student health concerns that may impact learning. Screenings are performed by certified personnel, and parents/guardians are notified of any abnormal results with recommendations for follow-up care.
Vision and Hearing Screenings
Students are screened for vision and hearing in Pre-K, Kindergarten, 1st, 3rd, 5th, and 7th grades, as well as those students that are new to Aledo ISD. These screenings help identify concerns that could affect academic performance, communication, and overall well-being.
Spinal Screening
Spinal screenings are conducted to detect early signs of abnormal spinal curvature, such as scoliosis. In Texas, this screening is performed for girls in the fall semester of 5th and 7th grades (or at 10 and 12 years old) and boys in the fall semester of 8th grade (or 13 to 14 years old).
Type 2 Diabetes Risk Assessment
A Type 2 diabetes risk assessment is completed for students in 1st, 3rd, 5th, and 7th grades. This consists of identifying those children with the acanthosis nigricans marker, a skin condition that signals high insulin levels. Children who are positively identified with the marker undergo additional assessments of height, weight and blood pressure.
If a parent wishes to decline any of the state-mandated health screenings, a letter is required stating that they are declining school-based screening and that the required screening will be performed by a licensed healthcare provider outside of school. The screening results must be provided to the school nurse.
