Common Health Conditions
Managing Common Student Health Conditions
In Aledo ISD, our Health Services team supports students with a wide range of health needs to ensure they are safe, healthy, and ready to learn. Our school nurses and clinic staff provide compassionate, evidence-based care while partnering with families, staff, and healthcare providers to support student success.
Students may come to school with health conditions that require monitoring or support during the school day. Below are some of the most common health conditions encountered in our schools.
Asthma
Asthma is one of the most frequently managed chronic conditions in the school setting. Students with asthma may experience coughing, wheezing, or shortness of breath that can impact participation in class and physical activity. Our nurses work with families and healthcare providers to support students through individualized care plans and medication access during the school day.
Allergies and Anaphylaxis
Food and environmental allergies are common among students. Aledo ISD follows established procedures to support students with severe allergies, including the development of individualized healthcare plans and emergency action plans when needed.
Our district also collaborates with families and cafeteria services to help manage dietary needs and reduce exposure risks in the school environment.
Diabetes
Students with diabetes may require daily monitoring and support, including blood glucose checks, insulin administration, and recognition of symptoms related to high or low blood sugar. School nurses coordinate care to help students safely participate in academic and extracurricular activities.
Seizure Disorders
Students with seizure disorders may require emergency action plans and staff awareness of seizure first aid. Each student’s needs are unique, and care is guided by individualized plans developed in collaboration with families and healthcare providers.
Mental and Emotional Health
Supporting the mental and emotional well-being of students is a key priority in Aledo Independent School District. Health Services collaborates with counseling staff and administrators to support students experiencing stress, anxiety, or other mental health concerns that may impact learning and school attendance.
Communicable Illnesses
School clinics frequently manage common illnesses such as fever, respiratory infections, stomach illnesses, and skin conditions. Through programs like Bearcat Care, students may also receive on-campus telehealth services for minor illnesses such as cold and flu symptoms, sore throat, rashes, and earaches—helping reduce time away from class.
