Bacterial Meningitis

Bacterial meningitis is caused by certain types of bacteria that can spread through respiratory droplets or close contact, such as coughing, sneezing, or sharing drinks or utensils.

Common bacteria that cause meningitis include:

• Neisseria meningitidis (meningococcal)
• Streptococcus pneumoniae (pneumococcal)
• Haemophilus influenzae type b (Hib)

Symptoms may appear quickly and worsen rapidly. Seek medical care immediately if your child develops:

• Fever
• Severe headache
• Stiff neck
• Nausea or vomiting
• Sensitivity to light
• Confusion or difficulty concentrating
• Sleepiness or difficulty waking
• Seizures (in severe cases)

Bacterial meningitis is spread through:

• Close personal contact
• Respiratory droplets (coughing/sneezing)
• Sharing drinks, food, utensils, or personal items

It is not spread through casual contact like passing someone in the hallway.

Vaccination is the most effective way to prevent bacterial meningitis.

Recommended vaccines include:

• Meningococcal vaccine (MCV4) – required for Texas students entering 7th grade
• Pneumococcal vaccine (PCV)
• Haemophilus influenzae type b (Hib) vaccine

Additional prevention measures:

• Wash hands frequently
• Cover coughs and sneezes
• Avoid sharing personal items
• Stay home when sick
   

In accordance with Texas Department of State Health Services (DSHS) guidelines:

• Students diagnosed with bacterial meningitis must remain out of school
• Return to school is allowed only when:
  • At least 24 hours after starting effective treatment, and
  • Cleared by a healthcare provider

Additionally, students should be fever-free for 24 hours without medication before returning.

If bacterial meningitis is suspected or confirmed:

1. Seek immediate medical care
2. Notify the school nurse right away
3. Follow all medical guidance and treatment recommendations
4. Keep your child home until cleared to return

The district may work with local health authorities to ensure appropriate communication and prevention measures.
